Fortnite Sprite Rarity

The four tiers, which sprites sit in each, and what rarity actually changes.

Fortnite sprites come in four rarities: Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic. Rarity is a property of the sprite itself, not of the variant — a Gold Water sprite is still Rare, and a Normal Zero Point is still Mythic.

Across the 25 sprites currently released, the tiers are not evenly sized, and rarity changes three things: how hard a sprite is to find, what it costs in Sprite Dust, and — loosely — how impactful its ability is.

Mythic is the largest tier by sprite count but the smallest by variant count — several Mythics exist only as a single Normal with no alternate variants at all. That is what makes Mythic both the most expensive band within a season and, paradoxically, one of the quicker ones to complete once you find the sprites. Each variant's exact Sprite Dust cost is on its card in the tracker; it depends on the season as well as the tier.

Rare

The elemental sprites, plus Fishy. These spawn in predictable places tied to terrain, which makes them the easiest tier to farm deliberately — if you need Water, go to water.

  • Water — replenishes shields for you and nearby squadmates while in water. Spawns near lakes, rivers and the coastline.
  • Earth — a chance of extra rare items from chests, from 10% up to 30% at max level. Found around forests and wooded areas.
  • Fire — releases a fiery burst once you deal enough damage to an enemy. Found around city and built-up POIs.
  • Air — sprint faster, jump higher while sprinting, and take zero fall damage. From chests, Rare Chests and Sprite Chests across the map.
  • Fishy — increases swim speed by up to 200%, plus a brief movement boost when you take damage. Found in chests across the map.

Epic

Mostly Sprite Chest drops, with two unlocked by doing something specific rather than by looting.

  • Duck — emoting or jamming replenishes your shields. From Sprite Chests across the map.
  • Ghost — cloaks you on reload, up to 4 seconds at max level. Only spawns at night.
  • Demon — siphons health and shields on eliminations, up to 25 at max level. From Sprite Chests.
  • King — your pickaxe deals up to +125% more damage. From Sprite Chests.
  • Striker — triggers Overdrive when you mantle, hurdle or wall scramble. Unlocked by scoring a goal at the Soccer Pitch.
  • Aura — grants a Shock Rock charge once you deal enough damage. Found in chests and Supply Drops.

Legendary

Chest-only spawns and boss drops. This is the tier where abilities start affecting the whole squad rather than just you.

  • Dream — grants a random item each level, reaching legendary loot at max level. Chests only, a rarer spawn.
  • Punk — a chance of infinite ammo. Chests only, a rarer spawn.
  • Boss — boosts maximum Health and Shield by up to +25. Drops from any Boss after you defeat them.
  • Seven — makes enemy footsteps visible to your whole squad, with trails lasting up to 30 seconds. From Sprite Chests in unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build.
  • Lootin' Llama — a chance of a weapon upgrade when you open an ammo box, rising to 20%. From Relic Chests, plus Sprite and Rare Chests around Golden Grove and Calamari Canyon.
  • Peeky Peely — marks rare sprite variants and the enemies carrying them within up to 80m, but reveals your location too. Found on high ground.

Mythic

The rarest tier, and the one with the most collaboration and event sprites. Several exist only as a Normal.

  • John Wick — reveals nearby enemies for up to 5 seconds after you knock or eliminate a player. From the Simpsons Reload map in Springfield; unlock it there and it carries over to Battle Royale.
  • Batman — leap into the air and deploy the Bat Cape to glide, and find rare sprites in chests more often. Beat the Catwoman, Harley Quinn or Poison Ivy NPCs, complete the DC quests, or open Sprite Chests.
  • Burnt Peanut — on eliminations, up to a 60% chance of extra loot, with a shot at mythic loot once maxed. Drops from Relic Chests at around 1.5%.
  • Vini Jr. — sprint to unlock a slidekick that damages enemies and boosts fire rate and reload speed. From Sprite Chests and Rare Chests.
  • Zero Point — spawns a Shield Bubble Jr. when you use a healing item on yourself. From vault and keycard Sprite Chests, the rarest collectible. It also has the most variants of any sprite, at eight.
  • Grim Reaper — anyone who attacks you gets marked, for up to 5 seconds. Found in chests across the map.
  • Ironmouse — regenerates health when you're low, and cloaks you with low gravity while it heals. From Relic Chests.
  • Pollo — after an elimination, you and your squad regenerate shields for up to 10 seconds. From Sprite Chests and Rare Chests.

Does rarity make a sprite better?

Not reliably. Rarity tracks how hard a sprite is to obtain far more closely than how useful it is in a match. Air is Rare and gives permanent movement and fall-damage immunity that many players never swap out; several Mythics are situational by comparison. Treat rarity as a measure of scarcity and Dust cost, and judge abilities on their own.

Every sprite also levels up, and the ability values above are quoted at base and at max level. A maxed Rare frequently outperforms an unlevelled Mythic.

Variants and rarity

Alternate variants — Cube, Gold, Quack, Gummy, Galaxy, Holofoil and Gem — are cosmetic. They do not change a sprite's ability or its rarity, only its appearance and its Dust price — every alternate variant of a sprite costs the same, and more than its Normal. Not every sprite has every variant: Normal is the only one all 25 have, while Quack appears on just four.
